Our Story

We built OpenAssets because we watched a fund close its books for two weeks

The founding team spent years building data systems for financial institutions and kept running into the same problem: ownership records spread across spreadsheets, custodian exports, and manual email threads.

The Origin

The data layer that should have existed

Before OpenAssets, Gabor Gurbacs and Kofi Mensah spent years embedded in financial institutions, building data infrastructure for investment management and trading operations. The work consistently circled the same problem: no standard way to normalize ownership records across custodians, no automated path from raw feed to reconciled position, and no first-class approach to producing the audit trail those reconciled records needed to carry.

Book closes ran two weeks not because the work was complex, but because the data was in the wrong shape. Analysts spent most of that time reformatting custodian exports and hunting discrepancies that a deterministic system could have caught the day they appeared.

Priya Chandrasekaran joined from the compliance side, bringing direct experience with what SEC, GLBA, and CFTC requirements actually need from a data layer. The three co-founders agreed: the right fix was not a better spreadsheet template or a compliance dashboard bolted onto a generic database. It was a data layer that treated ownership compliance as the design constraint from the first line of code.

OpenAssets was incorporated in 2024. The first pilot ran with two early-access firms in mid-2025. Angel funding closed in July 2025. Expanded early access opened in Q4 2025.

The Team

People who understand the problem from inside the systems

Gabor Gurbacs
Gabor Gurbacs
CEO and Co-Founder

Background in financial data infrastructure and investment management operations, with years building the ownership record systems that institutional back offices depend on. The specific gap he kept encountering throughout that work was the absence of a coherent data layer for RWA compliance, which became the founding thesis for OpenAssets.

Kofi Mensah
Kofi Mensah
CTO and Co-Founder

Specializes in distributed systems and settlement data infrastructure. Built cloud-native compliance pipelines and data normalization layers for institutional trading operations. Brings deep experience in designing systems where data provenance and auditability are first-class requirements, not afterthoughts.

Priya Chandrasekaran
Priya Chandrasekaran
Head of Compliance

Seven years in regulatory compliance roles at asset management firms, focusing on SEC, CFTC, and GLBA requirements. Brings practical knowledge of what compliance examiners actually ask for and what record-keeping systems are expected to produce, which directly shaped OpenAssets' compliance output design.

How We Work

Three things we refuse to compromise on

Data integrity over convenience

We do not offer approximations or "good enough" reconciliation. Every position either reconciles or flags as an exception with a specific reason. There is no middle state where something looks reconciled but hasn't been verified. This is inconvenient to build and easy to test for.

Compliance by design, not by retrofit

The data model was designed around regulatory requirements from the beginning. Audit trails, retention structures, and export formats are part of the schema, not features added on top. When a regulation changes, we update the canonical model, and all output formats update with it.

Honest about what we do and do not do

We process ownership data and produce compliance-ready records. We are not a portfolio management system, a risk platform, or a trading system. We focus on one problem: making ownership reconciliation accurate, fast, and audit-ready. That scope is intentional.
